Terrace Martin On Wiz Khalifa, Producers, Backing Up

Producer Terrace Martin talks about working with Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar along with the importance of hard work, ingenuity, and remaining humble in the face of success. He also the difference between being a beat and producer and why he refuses to send beats to artists.

Important Lesson:
Yes, Terrace Martin also lost an enormous collection of original music due to a harddrive failure. If you haven’t done it recently, please back up right now.

There are like six or seven producers in the world.

My job is to help you make your dream come true.

  1. “art is the one of the things in life where you’ll always be a student…you’ll die being a student. if you forget that, you’ll die being wack” – awesome quote from terrace martin. this interview was superb.

  2. all my samples and data is on two little flash drives. I love reason. all i need is the data file and that sample and am good.

  3. damnit, stop scaring me with all this talk of data back up!! 🙂 I’m out of USB ports (yes, that’s TWO, 7-port hubs maxed) so I’m just waiting until I can afford an iMac or something with more dedicated ports…

I’ll come crying here when I lose all my beats though 😀

  4. As far as back up in my old music class, the teacher said that you should have 3 back ups.
    1. harddrive back
    2. CD/DVD back up
    3. a back up that you only touch to back up the 2 back up’s, and put in to a saftey deposit box in the bank.

  5. This is an awesome interview. I love the part where he talks about a producer “adding colors to the sketch” and “art is one of the few things where you will die a student” powerful words. As a beat maker myself, i need to keep these things in mind and stay on my hustle.

  6. Same Old Same Old, its like theses guys get a few years in the game and automatically get a philosophy degree, its smoke and mirrors hes saying nothing you didn’t know already and he’s lazy he plays sax, keys i’m sure he’s got the ability to make the shit he’s sampling but his sound is pretty boring esp on wiz stuff… CMON SON!
