Crate Update: Free Records @ HPRS, The Thing Tour

Hopefully this will help all you dusty fingered vinyl maniacs get your fix for the weekend. I know it’s rough.

DJ Funktual’s Tour of The Thing
I suppose we’ve all seen enough videos of Brooklyn’s The Thing over the years, but if there’s anything that tugs at a seasoned vinyl addicts heartstrings, it’s seeing piles and piles of records stacked in ways you could never imagine. Then again, it’s extremely painful to see vinyl mistreated, stacked horizontally, and strewn across the floor.

The 45’s are dustry bro. I think a cat’s been using them for a litter box.

Highland Park Record Sale (HPRS) Free Records Sale
It all goes down tomorrow Saturday, March 26th from 11am to 6pm. Highland Park Record Sale (HPRS) founder Gregorious has combed though the the sale’s archives to give visitors a free crack at old inventory.

Direct from “Crazy” Gregorious himself:
What’s that? Free Records? I speak the truth folks…….

Sometime this week I will be heading to the spot and combing through the dollar lounge. I surmise that I will be pulling at least 50 percent of the dollar vinyl and just plain old giving it away on Saturday March 26th! No strings attached- just straight up free vinyl!!

That’s crazy talk!

Well, here’s some more craziness! The next Saturday sale after this one will be on National Record Store Day (Saturday April 16th). My plan is to take about 25 percent of my PRICED inventory and move it to the dollar lounge! MANY of those records that have been sitting around with prices between 2 and 6 bucks will be MARKED DOWN to one measly dollar!

Why am I doing this you ask? Because I’m crazy. I really should be more proactive here and make my own “Crazy Eddie” type commercial promoting this sale. But really, I got stuff I have been sitting on for way too long and want to hook you guys up with some sweet vinyl for a sweet price.

SATURDAY MARCH 26th!
11AM-6PM
FREE RECORDS!!!

  1. I had a chance to check this place out a few weeks back during our N.Y trip (You can see the FirehouseSoundLabs.com sticker on the 1st few frames and again at 0:26) We spent a day there and still probably didn’t eve make it through 5% of what was there. I would love to have a cache that crazy closer to L.A

  2. awww man why’d i watch this, this isn’t a fix, this just exacerbates the my need for digging!!! 🙁

  3. I sure wish I was back home…Damn I am home sick. I would have taken that 3hr trip with my niggas and we would have a ball digging through that place, Dam its like heaven & hell up in there at least from the video. Heaven to see all those records hell to see how they are orginized and the conditions. Probably need some gloves and a dust mask to dig down there!!! … AND I WOULD DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT…Lol.

  4. Wow! That is vinyl heaven over there, lol! I’d just get about 10 crates from different spots in the store & take them home without looking at them! Now that would be fun, just to see what gems you’d come up with! I’m waaayyy in NC, so I can’t make it, but I wish everyone well that can make it for the free pickings! I know that the next hits could easily come from some obscure samples from some albums or 45’s in that store!! Happy hunting, you lucky doggs, lol!!

    • The Thing arent the one’s giving away free vinyl. The free vinyl is at a smaller record sale out in NJ. Kind of a weird post since the video and the record sale dont have anything to do with eachother.

  5. Damn, I felt claustrophobic lookin’ at all that vinyl crammed in one small spot. That’s a place you’d have to spend a week at, armed with deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste and live off of graham crackers and water, lol.

  6. The Thing is digging 101 spot in NYC. Everybody has been there and done that. Rare joints are just that: rare. Nonetheless, the records are cheap and if you put enough hours in, you’ll usually find some decent stuff. A great deal of the records are in horrible shape, but that’s irrelevant to most diggers. It’s more like a challenge than anything else. It took me 5 hours to go through a side room with nothing but crates of 45s. I’d estimate it to be about 50+ crates. Out of those crates, I found maybe 5 good records. Not bad, considering that they’re 50 cents each.

  7. what a fucking mess . $2 a record for shit . the amount of crap you would have to go through to find just a few good records .
