DJ Machine Joystick Inspired Music Controller

djmachine2.jpg

Music should always be fun. Then again, it’s hard not to be fun when you’re making music using a joystick controller.  Industrial Designer Christian Peetz has designed the DJ Machine, which he refers to as the Finger Orchestra, as his entry for the James Dyson Award.

While each joystick controller is programmable, the unit also has the ability to communicate via Bluetooth.

Cassette Tape Lamps (Tape Is Not Dead)

cassette1.jpg

OooMy Design pays tribute to the glory days of cassette tapes with their Cassette Tape Lamps, which are available in both floor model and smaller table sizes.  Since the lamps were created by simply tying together a number of previously used cassettes, the creators add that it’s possible to play with the lamps and even switch your own tapes in and out.

Void Levitating Turntable by Rhea Jeong

void03.jpg

Influenced by the Vinyl Killer, Rhea Jeong’s concept of a magnetic levitating vinyl “turntable” features a neat square base and self-propelled red ball containing stylus, amp, and speaker.

The seemingly magical vinyl player looks great, but don’t get your hopes up.  As a concept design, the retail release date for the Void is set for sometime between never and someday in your dreams.

AR Scratch: Real Records, Virtual Scratching

One thing to remember is that producers and DJ’s have always been hackers that played with technology to create new forms of sound.  Todd Vanderlin’s AR Scratch may not be the best way to perform a flare or a scribble, but his creative and experimental use of AR markers, OpenFrameworks, and vinyl must be commended.  … Read more

CD Turntables Bring Analog Beauty To Digital Goodness

cdtt4.jpg

There’s a certain inexplicable inherent visual beauty with vinyl and turntables that CD’s and mp3’s will never have.  I’ve personally dreamed of playing CD’s in a similar manner to records.

Professional sound mixer Pete Verrando seems to hold the same appreciation for vinyl and has attempted to combine the utility of CD’s with the visual aesthetic of vinyl.

They’re still prototypes, so don’t even begin to ask how they work… still, there’s no denying the beauty of his creations!

Visit Pete Verrando for more details and info.
